Maestro Richter has passed today, at the "Central  Hospital" in Moscow, coming from his Dacha, because of a serious heart attack. 
We join our's own to the sadness of all the people who loved his great music.

This is as great a loss as music has suffered in many years.  Richter was one of the few artists of the past fifty years with a distincitive musical 
profile, and the technique and intellect to maintain that distinctive profile within strongly defined musical boundaries.  He was never guilty of display for display's sake, though he certainly had the technical ability to have gone that way.  He played a huge range of music with sympathy, understanding, and a sure sense of musical style.  His death is a very sad moment.

Sviatoslav Richter was the best, the greatest pianis who ever lived. I was fortunate enough to hear him live on many occasions and I remember most of those concerts as if they took place yesterday. Probably the most memorable one was in December of 1980 in Moscow Conservatory when he played all Beethoven program (Sonatas #7, 8, 17 & 18). 
This was definitely the best concert I have ever heard in my life and I will remain grateful for that unbelievable experience forever.

Svjatoslav Richter è stato il più grande pianista mai vissuto. Sono stato così fortunato da averlo ascoltato dal vivo in varie occasioni e ricordo quasi tutti questi concerti come se fossero avvenuti appena ieri. Il più memorabile è forse quello del Dicembre 1980 al Conservatorio di Mosca, quando intepretò un programma tutto di Beethoven (sonate n. 7,8,17 e 18). 
Si tratta in assoluto del più bel concerto abbia mai ascoltato nella mia vita e gli rimarrò grato per sempre per questa incredibile esperienza.

To all those mourning the death of Richter. 
It is a very sad moment, but you must remember that Richter was the greatest recording artist in history in terms of number and also perhaps quality.  Do him a favor and let his music live on in an international audience...on audio recordings. 
Also it might make you feel better that Richter's wish during the past few months was "only to die."  He can rest in peace now with his 
wish granted.  (No, Richter was not a man of religion.). 
From his technically fabulous recordings early in 1942, to the majestic, mature interpretations in 1994, anyone can enjoy his work.

greatest musicians of the Soviet era, died today after suffering a heart attack, the Russian Culture Ministry said. He was 82. 
Richter had been taken to Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital after complaining of chest pains Thursday at his country home outside Moscow, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.

Sviatoslav Richter died earlier today at his home outside Moscow. 
They played, as a tribute, his great recording of Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No 7. 
Others will be able to write more eloquently than I of his great gift to music. I only wish to record his death, and mourn his passing.

We have lost a giant of the piano, perhaps the last of the great Russian pianists. Such musicianship and such qualities we may never see again in the concert hall. Just after listening to his great "Pictures at an Exhibition" (Sofia 1958) I got the bad news. One of my favored artist passed away. He 
died at an age of 83. The remaining evening I'll listen to some his best performances.

 My piano teacher - who had a classical career of his own in the fifties - was of the opinion that Richter was as good as it got.  I remember that Richter used to play the entire Well Tempered Clavier of Bach as a two night program.  One of the first to do this was Chopin, and very few pianists ever tried it. 
One of Richter's great strengths was his ability to play music from any era, which is rare to the point of almost being unique.  Many pianists that are generally considered great made decisions to concentrate on mastering a single style or even a single composer, but Richter played everything from Bach and Scarlatti through the 20th Century composers. 
A great talent is gone.

Una delle grandi doti di Richter era la sua capacità di suonare musica di ogni epoca, un pregio così raro da essere probabilmente unico. Molti pianisti consideratri come grandi decidono di concentrarsi nel padroneggiare un singolo stile o addirittura un singolo compositore, ma Richter suonava tutto, da Bach a Scarlatti fino ai compositori del 20° secolo. 
Se n'è andato un grande talento.

Classical music may not be the focus of this group...but since we do seem to be the "place of record" for those in the stereo cabinet, 
I for one mourn deeply the passing of the greatest pianist of our century...Russian legend Svyatoslav Richter. 
No one has ever exhibited the combination of power and gentleness almost simultaneously on the piano that Richter did. 
One world-wide award winning recording alone, his Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 (Deutsche Grammophon 447-420-2) is the most powerful, moving piano performance ever recorded.  His playing was defined by a 
combination of unstoppable, thundering forward thrust modified by the concurrent tension of restraint to the breaking point - something NO 
other pianist has ever quite duplicated. 
No one has even come close to Richter's playing in craft and emotion...Ivo promised to.... but somehow got caught up in his monstrous notoriety &  public adoration and lost his way. 
Richter never lost his way.

Discorso sul vostro apparato stereo --- 

Forse la musica classica non è il punto focale di questo gruppo ...  ma siccome sembra che noi si sia il "posto dei record" dell'apparato stereo, voglio per una volta piangere profondamente la scomparsa di uno dei maggiori pianisti del nostro secolo ... il mito russo Svjatoslav Richter. 
Nessuno aveva mai mostrato al pianoforte una tale simultanea  combinazione di delicatezza e forza come ha fatto Richter. 
La più forte e commovente interpretazione di pianoforte mai registrata è senz'altro la sua incisione, che ha vinto premi in tutto il mondo, del concerto N. 2 di Rachmaninov (Deutsche Grammophon 447-420-2). Il suo pianismo può essere definito come qualcosa che nessun altro pianista è mai riuscito a ripetere: una tempestosa fiducia nel futuro temperata da  una contemporanea tensione nel  fermarsi al punto di rottura. Nessuno si è mai avvicinato al pianismo di Richter quanto a arte e emozione... Ivo era una promessa ... ma la sua mostruosa notorietà & l'adorazione del pubblico gli hanno fatto qualcosa e ha smarrito il cammino. 
Richter non ha mai smarrito il cammino.

Svjatoslav Richter, che ha raggiunto la fama in Unione Sovietica negli anni '40 per diventare uno dei più importanti pianisti del 20° secolo, è morto venerdì in ospedale a Mosca per un attacco di cuore, secondo quanto afferma il Ministro russo della Cultura. Aveva 82 anni. Secondo ITAR-Tass giovedì era stato trasportato dalla sua casa di campagna fuori Mosca alla Clinica Centrale perché lamentava dolori al petto. Richter era conosciuto per la sua tecnica brillante e per un repertorio che includeva praticamente tutti gli stili, da Bach a Debussy, da Prokof'ev a Sostakovich.

To celebrate this great artist, let me just quote from Piero Rattalino's book, "Pianisti e Fortisti" (the article is called 'The Third Man'): "How many can claim today to be at his level? How many are his peers, in the whole history of piano playing? Even if I will appear hyperselective, only two names come to mind: Franz Liszt and Ferruccio Busoni. The first, was born in 1811, the second in 1866, fiftyone years later. And Richter was born in 1915, fortynine years after Busoni."

Per celebrare questo grande artista lasciatemi citare dal libro di Piero Rattalino, "Pianisti e Fortisti" (l'articolo di intitola "Il terzo uomo"): "Chi può proclamare oggi di essere al suo livello? Quanti gli stanno a pari, in tutta la storia del pianismo? A costo di apparire iperselettivo, solo due nomi mi vegono in mente: Franz Liszt e Ferruccio Busoni. Il primo è nato nel 1811, il secondo nel 1866, cinquantuno anni più tardi. E Richter è nato nel 1915, quarantanove anni dopo Busoni".

Mi permetto di inserirmi nel vostro newsgroup, che peraltro seguo sempre con molto interesse, per informarvi (visto che i mass-media non hanno detto praticamente nulla) che oggi alle 17:30 è morto il mitico SVIATOSLAV RICHTER....

What?  I didn't know that! These news strikes me hardly. His perfect performances were legendary. I have many recordings of his performances and, after Benedetti Michelangeli, he was the pianist who, better that others, was able to transmit to the listener the exact meaning of the excerpt - being this by Bach, or by Ciajkovskij....

Cosa? Non lo sapevo, ed e' una notizia che mi colpisce profondamente. La perfezione esecutiva di Richter era leggendaria. 
Ho tanto da lui eseguito, e - dopo Benedetti Michelangeli - era il pianista che piu' di ogni altro sapeva infondere all'ascoltatore lo 
spirito del brano, fosse Bach o Ciajkowskij. ...
